The West Virginia Governor's School for Mathematics and Science (GSMS) is a summer residential program providing academic enrichment in the areas of science and math for current 7th and 8th graders living in and attending school in West Virginia. In summer 2009, the session for students who are currently in the seventh grade (often referred to as "rising 8th graders") is July 8 -17 at WVU. Current eighth graders (rising 9th graders) can apply to attend a session at WVU July 19 - 31 or at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory at Green Bank August 2-15.
Central research themes are chosen each year, and the enhancing activities broaden students' understanding of the role of scientific research in society. See About GSMS for a more comprehensive discussion of GSMS 2009.
Governor Bob Wise is credited with the origin of GSMS, since he designated more than $400,000 of Inauguration surplus funds to start the endeavor. It continues through the efforts of the West Virginia Department of Education and the Arts, the West Virginia Experimental Program to Stimulate Research (EPSCoR) and the West Virginia Department of Education.
Grab your hats as you start to navigate (logically and sequentially, of course) through the site. You could be setting yourself up for a memorable summer experience in the wonderful world of science and math.
