The West Virginia Governor's School for Mathematics and Science (GSMS), a summer residential program providing academic enrichment in the areas of science and math for current 7th and 8th graders living in and attending school in West Virginia, is pleased to announce that applications for 2011 are ready and plans are moving ahead for another successful summer of scientific and mathematic stimulation.

West Virginia University and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory at Green Bank will be the sites for GSMS in 2011.

Central research themes are chosen each year, and the enhancing activities broaden students' understanding of the role of scientific research in society. See About GSMS for a more comprehensive discussion of GSMS 2011. You may also browse the websites created at the 2011 sessions by following the links in the column on the right of this page.

Governor Bob Wise is credited with the origin of GSMS, since he designated more than $400,000 of Inauguration surplus funds to start the endeavor. It continues through the efforts of the West Virginia Legislature, the Department of Education and the Arts, the West Virginia Experimental Program to Stimulate Research (EPSCoR) and the West Virginia Department of Education.

All Governor's Schools are free for the students and their families. The only financial responsibilites families have are providing transportation to and from the academy, spending money, and health insurance.

Grab your hats as you start to navigate (logically and sequentially, of course) through the site. You could be setting yourself up for a memorable summer experience in the wonderful world of science and math.

The Governor's School for Math and Science will be held at WVU and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory.  For the first time this year, the only session for rising ninth graders will be held at the NRAO site.  There will be two sessions for rising eight-gaders at WVU, both held in mid-to-late June. The session at NRAO begins Sunday, July 29 and runs through Saturday, August 11.
