GHA Student Experiences

Student Eligibility

  1. Must be a resident of West Virginia
  2. Must attend high school in West Virginia and plan to be in attendance next year.
  3. Must be a junior at the time of application
  4. Must not graduate before January 2008
  5. Must have a grade-point average of at least 3.5 (unweighted) or be in top 10% of class
  6. Must have no semester/term grade lower than a "C."
  7. Must have scored at Distinguished level on two of the three subtests of the WESTEST taken during the sophomore year (Math, Science, Language Arts) OR have earned a score at or above the 90th percentile on the ACT, PLAN, PSAT, Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or another standardized test.
  8. Must be dedicated to learning Should possess an outstanding native ability
  9. Must be willing to accept academic challenges
  10. ***The school team may waive requirement 5, 6, or 7. An explanation must accompany any waiver

Faculty Eligibility

  1. Must exhibit creativity
  2. Must be well-versed in their subjects
  3. Must have a broad range of interests and experiences
  4. Must relate well to bright students of high school age
  5. Must be willing to provide leadership in integrating subject matter in the sciences, humanitities and the arts
  6. Must be willing to participate in a living-learning situation which includes evenings and weekends

Staff Eligibility and Duties--Interns, resident director and resident assistants

  1. Must have completed two years (64 credit hours) of college study prior to the beginning of the program
  2. Shall mentor students and assist faculty as required
  3. Shall plan recreational activities and travel for small groups
  4. Shall provide a communications link between the students and faculty
  5. Shall serve as role models for Academy participants
